How We Train

The UCB Program consists of solo and partner exercises that develop your awareness & concentration. If you have the awareness, you can get the feel for a movement. If you have the feel and can concentrate, you can become more natural. This type of practice can affect permanent change in one's condition.

Our curriculum is based on Taiji (Tai Chi) Principles, drawing from Taoist & Chan (Zen) Buddhist techniques.

Practice includes:

Spiral Force

Spirals are the only way the body can move... when moving naturally. Linear or 2 dimensional movement is the result of movement which does not reflect an understanding of the nature of the body. Spiral force is produced when the 5 Qualities of Movement are present. Linear movement is only possible when requisite qualities are missing. Performing repeated linear movement under load results in injury.

Strength and Balance

Strength & Power are terms used to describe the capacity to have an effect or perform work.

Physical strength can be distinguished from Strength of Materials. In the UCB Program, Structure best describes what we endeavor to accomplish through our various methods.

Specific benefits of cultivating and refining ones structure can include:

  • Balance - Refined awareness of the alignment with gravity results in exquisite balance. Fewer falls means fewer injuries.
  • Endurance - Awareness of one's structure when moving results in greatly improved 'Use of Self'. An efficient movement uses less energy... more energy means greater capacity to get things done.
  • Pain relief - Better structure means the body can move naturally. The bits responsible for opposing gravity are clearly distinguished from those used for movement. When such comprehension is achieved, old habits fall away as can chronic structural pain.
  • Profound Relaxation - There can be no functional relaxation without good structure. By Functional Relaxation we mean a relaxation that is part of your condition, rather than an exceptional, fleeting, or occasional feeling.

Do You Have A Seniors Program?

Yes!

It's called 'UCB For Strength & Balance'. The program is a short series of simple exercises 20 - 40 minutes long. These exercises address relaxation, balance, bone density and coordination. The training can be described as a gentle synthesis of the following activities.

There is an instructional video in development that can be used to guide your workout in the privacy of your own home. Expected availability is late Fall 2008.

If you wish to have more structured, hands on training, please contact us using the link above right. We offer ongoing classes, but most will only need a single 3 hour workshop to get started. You will find costs to be quite reasonable. Gather a group of your friends and get in touch!

Copyrights, Credits & Intellectual Property

This is a serious topic to which a great deal of thought has been given. The Internal tradition stretches far into the mists of the past, we are all fortunate to be able to have real work to do. By following this path, we endeavor to stand on the shoulders of giants.

In light of this venerable tradition, the UnCarved Block approach is very simple, If you didn't make it, you can't take it... get permission and give credit where credit is due. Taking without permission is theft.

A very large percentage of UnCarved Block Program practitioners are instructors from other disciplines. If you teach, please ensure that you can continue to participate by respecting the life's work of others.

Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan)

The UCB Program uses specialized drills to help practitioners change their condition. Many of these come from Taijiquan.

  • Body & Torso Methods
  • Breathing Techniques
  • Footwork & Stepping
  • Formwork & Applications
  • Long Pole Drills
  • Silk Pulling & Reeling
  • Striking
  • Vibrating Wire Drills
  • Work with Weights

Please keep in mind that Taijiquan, I-Liq Chuan, or any other Internal martial art, by definition follows Taiji (Tai Chi)Principles. Taijiquan is but one expression of Taiji Philosophy.
