Strength and Balance

Strength & Power are terms used to describe the capacity to have an effect or perform work.

Physical strength can be distinguished from Strength of Materials. In the UCB Program, Structure best describes what we endeavor to accomplish through our various methods.

Specific benefits of cultivating and refining ones structure can include:

  • Balance - Refined awareness of the alignment with gravity results in exquisite balance. Fewer falls means fewer injuries.
  • Endurance - Awareness of one's structure when moving results in greatly improved 'Use of Self'. An efficient movement uses less energy... more energy means greater capacity to get things done.
  • Pain relief - Better structure means the body can move naturally. The bits responsible for opposing gravity are clearly distinguished from those used for movement. When such comprehension is achieved, old habits fall away as can chronic structural pain.
  • Profound Relaxation - There can be no functional relaxation without good structure. By Functional Relaxation we mean a relaxation that is part of your condition, rather than an exceptional, fleeting, or occasional feeling.

Copyrights, Credits & Intellectual Property

This is a serious topic to which a great deal of thought has been given. The Internal tradition stretches far into the mists of the past, we are all fortunate to be able to have real work to do. By following this path, we endeavor to stand on the shoulders of giants.

In light of this venerable tradition, the UnCarved Block approach is very simple, If you didn't make it, you can't take it... get permission and give credit where credit is due. Taking without permission is theft.

A very large percentage of UnCarved Block Program practitioners are instructors from other disciplines. If you teach, please ensure that you can continue to participate by respecting the life's work of others.

Stretching

In the UCB Program, stretching plays a vital role in loosening, softening and opening the body. As the body opens, so does the mind.

The Taoist stretches presented are specific to Internal practice and require a great deal of concentration to do properly. These activities will change your condition, be prepared to move far beyond ordinary warm up or warm down stretching methods.

Yoga, such as it is today, cannot do what these stretches do for your structure.

Health

Our immune system works best when we're relaxed and well oxygenated. Each gentle exercise in the UCB Kids Program utilizes specific awareness of the breath. Unlike sports activities, consistent practice results in conditions favorable to a stronger immune response without stressing the joints and connective tissues.

It is important that practitioners recognize that improved health is just one possible RESULT of correct practice - not the goal. The UCB Kids Program aims to teach lifetime skills that result in excellent posture, natural, relaxed movement and a profound ability to concentrate.

Balance

Relaxation is the key to finding your natural structure as well as cultivating the ability to concentrate. How do you 'teach' relaxation?

You don't. If you say to a student, "Hey, relax." You get the opposite result. The better question is "How can you produce the conditions that allow relaxation to occur?".

Physical relaxation arises when your body and it's parts are in balance. Mental calm is possible only when one's 'internal conditions' are in accordance with the reality of 'external conditions'... with a relaxed body and mind calm, harmony is possible.

There is no relaxation without balance. Another word for balance is harmony.
